Taking Action Against Paternity Fraud

Raising a child is usually seen as a joint effort between the child's mother and father. Even when the parents are no longer together, both parents are expected to provide economically for the child. Usually, there is no doubt who a child's mother is. Determining who the father is, however, can be a more difficult task.

Unfortunately, many men will taken womens' words that they are the fathers of their children. This is unfortunate because many women may lie about the true paternity of their children because they do not believe the real father can provide a good life for the child, they want to cover up an act of infidelity, or they simply do not know who the true father of the child is.

Regardless of why a woman lies about the paternity of her child, this act is known as paternity fraud. Women usually commit this act for economic assistance in raising their children. In other cases, though, women may commit an act of paternity fraud to give their children a sense of a family structure. Others may lie to men about the paternity of their children for help raising the children.

Whatever the cause of a paternity case, men who discover the truth may be able to sue the mothers to earn back the resources that they spent raising a child that was not theirs. At the very least, men should get an official ruling on the child's paternity by getting a DNA test. If the results are negative, the man will at least be off the hook for economically supporting the child.
