At the end of 2010, the United States Department of Transportation estimated that there were nearly 7 million commercial motor vehicle drivers licensed to travel interstate and intrastate highways throughout the country. All of those bus drivers and big truck drivers (meaning trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds) are supposed to meet strict safety regulations established by federal law. Meanwhile, it's common knowledge throughout the industry that many big truck drivers, trucking companies and their insurance agencies know how to skirt the system.
